icon Mechanical served as the mechanical contractor for the tooling installation in the newest General Motors Body Shop. This 380,000 sq. ft addition allowed for GM to integrate the build of the mid-size truck (Colorado and Canyon) with the full-size van starting in early 2014.
Our work scope included the unloading of pre-built robotic cells, reassembly of the cells, and installation of water and air utility piping to the cell valve stands, chemical cleaning of water systems and pressure testing.
Peak manpower was 40 pipefitters working between two shifts. Most of the utility pipe run was located between the trusses at an elevation of 25-30 feet above the floor. A strong safety plan provided an effective way to install the pipe among the many concurrent activities.
Coordination of work and logistics were the keys to making this project a success. It required careful scheduling and layout to allow access to the work areas as the floor space was filled. Constant communication between the crafts ensured that the cells were powered on in the designated sequence.
The layout was accomplished with the latest 3D survey equipment. Upon completion and startup of the robotic cells, icon remained on the project for the 12-month pre-production checkout and proving.
Project Highlights:
- 90 Day Duration
- 15,000 Linear Feet of Pipe Installation
- 450 Robots Installed
- 350 Subassemblies and Fixtures Installed
