icon Mechanical is the mechanical contractor of choice for Diageo's Captain Morgan Distillery Plant in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. icon has delivered a broad range of complex mechanical scopes across multiple engagements at one of the world's most recognized spirits production facilities.
Distillation Tower Removal and Replacement
One of icon's most distinctive engagements at the plant involved removing an existing 100-foot distillation column and managing the full replacement process. The new column was fabricated in Europe under icon's guidance and transported to St. Croix aboard the world's second-largest aircraft, a logistics feat that underscores icon's ability to execute in remote, resource-constrained environments. icon helped speed the overall project timeline by concurrently prefabbing every tower/pipe connection at its Granite City, IL, prefabrication shops while the stack was being constructed in Madrid, Spain.
The new distillation tower ultimately required over 800 pipe welds, which icon produced without error. Installation on all the new components and piping were completed prior to the column’s arrival and the tower was set with final connections made in one week. The project was completed 5 weeks ahead of schedule, putting the owner back on line.
