icon Mechanical served as the design-build and design-assist mechanical contractor for US Steel's De-Sulfurization Project at the Granite City Works facility. Operating within an active steel plant, icon coordinated a complex multi-system scope under tight daily installation windows while maintaining a zero-injury record across a 13-month schedule.

The most demanding elements of the project included executing 30 critical lifts ranging from 15-ton four-point picks to 120-ton eight-point picks, coordinating prefabricated interconnecting piping with a fabricator in Houston, and installing piping in four-hour daily windows inside the working plant. Underground utilities, live hot taps on high-pressure services, and steam tracing systems rounded out a technically challenging scope delivered on time and without incident.

Scope of Work
  • Underground relocation of potable water, sewer, and drain systems
  • 12 hot taps on live services including 500 lb. steam, 300 lb. steam, coke oven gas, and acid gas
  • Critical lift design and execution — 30 modules, 15 to 120+ tons
  • Prefabricated piping coordination with Houston fabricator
  • 6,000 LF of fabricated piping, 3" to 6" diameter, carbon steel and stainless steel
  • Piping installed in 40 LF sections within 4-hour daily windows
  • 3,000 LF of steam tracing, trap assemblies, and supply assemblies
  • 1,500 LF of misc. service extensions: nitrogen, compressed air, cooling water, and 300 lb. steam
  • Piping and vessel pressure testing coordination with system designer and plant
Project Insights

  • 13-month schedule, completed on time
  • Zero injuries across entire project duration
  • 30 critical lifts up to 120+ tons in an active steel plant
