icon Mechanical served as the design-build mechanical contractor on this four-story data center, converting a historic department store into a modern, Tier III-rated facility. To meet the project's mechanical support demands, icon engineered a customized two-pump system backed by two standby pumps.
Scope of Work
Air-Side Distribution (9,600 SF Data Hall — Hot Aisle / Cold Aisle)
- (8) 36,000 CFM air handlers on the mezzanine, VFD-driven and controlled by supply-plenum static pressure
- Zone-by-zone motorized dampers in each supply plenum, delivering only the cooling each zone requires to reduce energy cost
- Supply air via Ductsox; return air drawn through ceiling grilles in the hot aisles
- (3) standalone humidifiers
Chilled-Water Plant (Roof)
- (4) 200-ton air-cooled chillers, each with six stages of cooling
- (3) chilled-water pumps, VFD-controlled to required GPM of flow
- All chilled-water piping welded and flanged to minimize any chance of leakage
Reliability & Controls
- Concurrently maintainable design earning Tier III certification
- N+1 redundancy — an additional unit always in standby at full data-center capacity
- EMS control system monitoring all equipment and rotating it weekly to balance runtime
